Job Description - Senior Engineer, Land Engineering
Position
Senior Engineer, Land Engineering
Organization Function: PWR--T, 778 Land Engineering Supervisor: Department Manager, Land Engineering
Context
The Senior Engineer is a position within the Land Installation department. The department has responsibility for ensuring the performance of all necessary engineering activities (documentation, planning, procurement and follow up) within the Land installation department.
Purpose
The Senior Engineer is primarily allocated to a project organization and responsible for the land installation engineering, technical deliverables and interface with the Land Installation department. The Senior Engineer will be reporting to the Department Manager, but will report to a Project Manager or a Project Lead engineer on a daily basis.
Areas of Responsibility
Engineering
- Responsible for understanding and defining the scope of work for the land installation department from the project contract
- Responsible for identification of possible approaches and solutions on how the scope of work can be addressed
- Responsible for documentation of the solutions and present them to the project stakeholders (Project Manager, Client, etc.)
- Responsible for the documentation linked to the land installation scope of the project to be prepared and delivered according to plan
- Responsible for the documents linked to the land installation scope is according to laws, rules and regulations
- Report to document control and project planner on changes in the plan
- Verify that documentation from sub contractor is delivered on time
- Follow up on sub contractors deliverables
- Archiving of project documentation in collaboration with document control
- Prepare as-built documentation
- Participate in DIC and IDC process
Leadership
- Facilitate so that the project team has ownership to the project goals
- Clearly define work tasks in the project team
- Clarify expectations towards stakeholders
- Aim for mutual trust and include the project team
- Be open for inputs and respect others opinion
- Give constructive feedback
- Distribute relevant information within the project team and to relevant stakeholders
- Promote Nexans. Do not spread negativity
Planning
- Prepare and maintain the land installation plan in the project. Give input to the overall project plan
- Plan project execution according to the Nexans project model
- Develop the project Master Document Register based on the Standard MDR
- Keep updated on the overall project plan
- Give input to the logistic plan
- Prepare, maintain and follow up a complete travel plan for the Land Installation resources (Airlines, rental cars, hotel, transport of equipment etc.)
Procurement
- Verify that necessary installation material and services is provided
- Prepare and maintain procurement list in cooperation with Project Procurement Manager
- Prepare technical procurement documentations
- Prepare Purchase requisitions
- Evaluate bids with respect to budget, quality and time
- Follow up on delivery
- Report deviations to project manager and procurement manager
Resource Management
- Clarify the responsible interface between lead and project engineer
- Identify, define and specify the need for resources as early as possible
- Administrate and follow up resources to solve the land installation scope of work
- Have a clear understanding of the scope of work and time schedules
- Assist in development and maintenance of shift plans
- Inform the resource owner on specific requirements
- Report on resource deviations
- Manage cable jointers through the foreman (Bas)
- Manage hired resources on the work site
- Stress the use of correct official communication channels
- Delegate work tasks to the foreman and other personnel as required on site
- Verify that all personnel understand their scope of work during site works
Economy
- Follow up the budget within the project discipline
- Flag necessary investments in the project
- Keep focus on cost and cost follow up
- Perform detailed review of the project budget in collaboration with the cost controller
- Identify and flag potential variation orders in the project
- Report cost deviations to project manager and controller
- Regularly follow up and make budget adjustment in collaboration with controller
- Check and approve invoices in BasWare / Alusta
- Compare tender budget with actual cost. Give feedback to tender department and controller. Re-calculate if necessary
Interfaces
- Make sure that the interfaces are clear and maintained within the discipline
- Identify the land installation interfaces as early as possible
- Define areas of responsibility, between lead and project engineer, as well as between internal disciplines
- Actively participate in follow up and collaboration with stakeholders
Health, Safety and Environment
- Verify that the work is performed according to internal and external rules, laws and regulations
- Identify what regulations that apply for the project
- Follow up internal HSE requirements
- Report undesired events
- Participate in, or lead, HSE meetings at work site
- Actively participate in toolbox talks and safe job analysis on site
- Serve as a good example and a role model. Take care of your colleagues
Logistics
- Verify that tools, equipment and installation materials are available at worksite
- Prepare necessary documentation for logistics
- Establish and maintain equipment list
- Verify that packing lists are established and maintained
- Verify that goods receipt and check is performed
- Verify that quality control is performed on all packed equipment before shipment
- Plan for return of equipment after site demobilization
Reporting
- Make sure that reporting is according to the project and departments requests
- Notify the project, the line department and other stakeholders in case of unforeseen events
- Keep the project team updated
- Keep updated on other activities in the project
Quality
- Deliver the agreed quality
- Follow up that internal instructions is applied to
- Follow up that contract requirements is applied to
- Report deviations in quality
Tendering
- Assist the tender group with technical advices and quality control
- Give feedback on deviations between tender budget and actual cost
Development
- Contribute to the department development
- Give input for better solutions and documents
Training
- Maintain and develop the competency within the department
- Share knowledge
- Participate and take initiative to relevant training and courses
- Facilitate lesson learned
Expected Results
- Ensure that the cable(s) and components are installed in accordance with the contract requirements and Nexans' standard and experience
- Contribute to implementing competitive and professional engineering solutions in the project
- Contribute to keeping the technology up to date with industry practice and rules
Position Sizing
Budget size: 0. Administer part of project budget without direct responsibility. Typically 5 to 100 MNOK. Direct report: 0. Administer personnel in project team. Typically 2 to 15
Requested Competencies and Qualification
- Engineer with relevant education, Master/Bachlor or equivalent or experience with similar positions
- Typically 5-10 years relevant engineering experience
- Good communication skills
- Fluent in Norwegian and English, verbal and written
- Be able to work in teams as well as independently
- Self-going on basic tasks within own discipline
- Good system understanding within own product area and strong technical competence within discipline area
- Good ability and willingness to train others on core tasks (tools, software) within discipline / technical discipline area
- "Self-propelled/inner drive to prioritize and perform own tasks
- Ability to adapt to change
- Ability to work under pressure and on own initiative
